First Presbyterian Church of Rutherford
Our Pastor

I’m Peter Wilkinson, the Designated Pastor at First Presbyterian Church. My “title” reflects that I’ve been called here to nurture and support the congregation as we seek to follow Jesus Christ. I arrived in July of 2007, from Sterling, Illinois, a small town approximately 100 miles west of Chicago.  Alongside the staff and elders I provide leadership in seeking God’s direction for our future.

I grew up in Lafayette, Indiana, and graduated from Purdue University, where I majored in Management.  After graduating from college, I moved to San Francisco, where I became involved at a Presbyterian Mission Station in San Francisco’s Chinatown.  I worked briefly for a Certified Public Accountant and then made the decision to attend San Francisco Theological Seminary.  I graduated with a Master of Divinity degree in 1983, and returned to the Midwest to begin my career as a Presbyterian Pastor.  I have served Churches in Indiana and Illinois prior to accepting the call in Rutherford.  I love to read, eat desserts (especially when chocolate is involved), play a little golf (or shoot a few hoops), and root for the Chicago Cubs or the Bears (I’ll always be a Midwest person!).

My life was forever changed when I married my wife, Jan Burgess.  We met while I was serving a church in Indianapolis.  We are blessed to be the parents of a high school student, Madeleine, and Evan, a fifth-grader.  We are enjoying the challenge and opportunity as a family to become a part of a new community.  We appreciate the reality of looking to the East and observing the Manhattan skyline while walking my son to school through a town where people will smile and greet you.

I am looking forward to my continued presence in this Church and this community.  Thanks for checking out our website. I’d love to have the chance to meet you face to face in the near future.  If you would like to speak with me directly about our church, you can reach me at petew@fpcrutherford.org or 201-438-3569.

Peace,
Pete
